Dianella Ski Lodge

First Floor extension to one of the earliest 1960's ski lodges Perisher valley

Dianella started in 1958 and is one of earliest ski lodges in Perisher Valley. Originally, a small, flat roof, timber and plywood cabin with 4 little bunk rooms and a simple kitchen/dining area, it was extended in 1987. The brief was to create a new entry directly from the snow fields into a boot, ski and sledges room with a new spacious living room above it opening to a north facing timber deck. Adding a new 45degs roof above the original plywood cabin created space for two new double bedrooms, bathroom and a stair landing. The internal finishes were carefully designed and crafted continuing the marine style of coachwood detailing of the original cabin. A massive new granite fireplace was placed in the center marking the edges of the new and old. A father and son pair of Norwegian stonemasons from Jindabyne extended the original granite walls adding skillfully rustic details. The external shapes, textures and colors were designed in response to the context of granite boulders, weathered snow gums and sloping meadows.
